From Classrooms to Smart Homes: How The Lexicon Schools Build Young Innovators Through R&D

Imagine a classroom where children aren’t just reading about innovation but actually creating it. At The Lexicon Schools, this is not just a dream—it’s an everyday reality. While most students are introduced to Research & Development (R&D) only in higher education, Lexiconites begin their journey into the world of research, innovation and problem-solving as early as Class VI.

Recently, our young minds at The Lexicon International School, Kalyaninagar showcased their first R&D project on the theme “Automated Home Devices.” What unfolded was a glimpse of the future—students building working models of smart home automation systems, conducting surveys, analyzing real data and linking it all to global challenges and solutions.

One team of innovators designed an Arduino-based sensor system that could automatically switch off lights when sunlight entered the room. A simple yet powerful idea, it reflected not only their technical skills but also their sensitivity toward sustainability and energy conservation.

But the experience didn’t stop at creating models. Students explored global case studies like Samsung’s Smart Community in Sweden and Philips Hue Smart Lighting, connecting their classroom learning to real-world practices. They also discovered how smart homes align with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—particularly Affordable & Clean Energy and Sustainable Cities.

Adding to the excitement, the learners attended a thought-provoking webinar by Mr. Mandar Sawant, an industry leader in automation. His insights helped them see the bigger picture of how technology is transforming lifestyles and communities across the globe.

Through this initiative, students not only celebrated the benefits of smart automation—efficiency, convenience, healthcare support and energy savings—but also critically evaluated its challenges such as privacy concerns, cost factors and dependence on technology. This balanced approach encouraged them to think like true researchers—curious, innovative, yet aware of real-world implications.

“At Lexicon, R&D is more than an academic requirement—it is a culture. We nurture curiosity, innovation and problem-solving from an early stage so that our students are not just prepared for the future, but ready to shape it,” says Mrs. Anju Luthra, Deputy Director, The Lexicon Schools.

At The Lexicon Schools, we believe that R&D is not a subject, but a culture. By integrating research, innovation and application into daily learning, we nurture young thinkers who are not just prepared for the future but equipped to shape it.

From classrooms to smart homes, from ideas to innovation, Lexiconites are proving that when curiosity meets guidance, the result is a generation of problem-solvers ready to create a better, smarter world.
