Building Athletes, Not Screen Addicts

According to a recent article in TOI “children now spend an average of four to 7.4 hours daily on screens”. This alarming statistic highlights the growing risks of excessive device use, including obesity, vision problems, poor posture and even mental health challenges like anxiety and depression. With physical activity and outdoor play taking a backseat, the need for intervention is urgent. Imagine a world where our children spend their days immersed in technology, their faces lit not by the sun but by glowing screens. Is that the future we envision for them? At Lexicon Schools, we believe in a world where children grow not just academically but physically, emotionally and socially, a world where playgrounds, not pixels, shape their childhood.

The Lexicon Group of Schools believes that lessons learned on the field prepare students for life’s challenges. Qualities like discipline, adaptability and collaboration—nurtured through sports—shape the leaders of tomorrow. By balancing academics with athletics, we cultivate compassionate, driven individuals ready to make meaningful contributions to society.

A testament to this philosophy is the recent success of our cricket team, which represented India in an international tournament in Bhutan. Their hard work and dedication culminated in victories in both the Under-14 and Under-17 categories. Vedant Nikumbh’s stellar performance earned him the title of Best Batsman in U19, while Spruh Bankar was named Best Bowler in U14. “This success extends beyond cricket,” says Soham Shinde of Grade IX E, who competed alongside Prakhar Rai and Samarth Waikar from Grade VB.

Mr. Aniket Salunkhe, Chief Operating Officer, Lexicon Schools and Lexicon Kids, emphasizes, “Children of today’s age need to break free from screens and virtual games and get back to the grounds. The schools today need a sporting mindset more than fancy playgrounds.”

Our students excel not only in cricket but also in diverse sports like target ball and karate, earning accolades and recognition year after year. These achievements reflect the specialized coaching they receive, the unwavering support from parents and mentors and their own determination to succeed.

At Lexicon, sports are far more than just extracurricular activities—they are life-changing experiences. Our structured programs, led by expert coaches and supported by state-of-the-art facilities, encourage students to explore a variety of sports, refine their skills, and even compete at state, national and international levels. Through sports, we not only help students build physical strength but also nurture essential life skills like resilience, teamwork, leadership and perseverance.

As we celebrate our cricket team’s victory in Bhutan, we take immense pride in their ability to inspire others to dream big. “At Lexicon Schools, we don’t just educate—we empower champions for life,” says Ms. Manisha Navayath, Principal, The Lexicon School, Hadapsar. Together, we are building a brighter, healthier and more balanced future for every child.

Join us to encourage our children to step away from screens and step onto the playground, where every game is a lesson, every victory is an inspiration, and every loss is a stepping stone to greatness. As we celebrate our students’ victories in Bhutan and beyond, we’re reminded of the greater purpose we serve: to nurture balanced, compassionate and resilient individuals who can make meaningful contributions to society.
